William D. Deveau

William Deveau is a dedicated insurance lawyer focusing his practice in the areas of commercial litigation and insurance coverage law. He counsels and represents insurers, managing general agents and brokers on complex insurance issues in connection with coverage programs including commercial and excess, employment practices, energy and maritime, workers’ compensation, professional liability and environmental.

Mr. Deveau also represents local and regional businesses in corporate, transactional and litigation matters.

Specifically, Mr. Deveau brings a proven track record handling matters involving bad faith, construction, energy production and distribution, bodily injury and property damage claims, personal and advertising injury, fraud and misrepresentation, broker liability, policy limit demands, wrongful acts, workers’ compensation and employers’ liability, and products liability. With both individual and collaborative efforts in handling matters, he achieves successful and efficient results for the clients he serves in state, federal and appellate courts.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Deveau served as a law clerk for the United States Department of Justice in the Environmental & Natural Resources Division, Environmental Enforcement Section in Washington, D.C.

  • Represented an insurer in mass tort coverage litigation concerning claims alleging bodily injury due to exposure to food flavorings.
  • Represented an insurer in $100 million fraud and material misrepresentation litigation.
  • Represented insurers in litigation and claims support related to opioid and acetaminophen products claims with over $100 million in exposure.
  • Represented an insurer in litigation and claims support related to $100 million solar industry products liability matter.
  • Represented insurers in litigation and claims support related to sexual abuse claims with over $100 million in exposure.
  • Represented insurers on risk transfer and recovery in New York Appellate Courts.
  • Represented an insurer in complex coverage litigation concerning consolidated claims alleging bodily injury and various other harms arising out of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
  • Represented commercial lines insurers in New York construction and labor law cases.
  • Represented first-party property insurers in catastrophe claims, including those from named storms.
  • Represented insurers and insureds in construction defect and condominium transition claims.
  • Served as national coordinating counsel for commercial lines insurer in toxic tort claims related to manufacturing byproducts.
  • Represented a regional business in $76 million combined stock and asset sale of petroleum wholesale and distribution company; lead attorney responsible for disposition and title transfer of $43 million of real estate assets.
  • Represented an alternative energy developer in the implementation of the largest solar photovoltaic power system in Hoboken, New Jersey.
  • Represented a $7 billion REIT in settlement of 125 defaulted real estate contracts, including arbitrations in connection with failed condominium project taken over by mezzanine lender; served as lead attorney on settlement and arbitration program.
  • Represented the owner and developer of one of the first projects in New Jersey to offer fractional ownership under the New Jersey Real Estate Timeshare Act and successfully won approval of this equity ownership club in Cape May from the State’s Real Estate Commission.
  • Represented private equity firms in structuring and real estate-related decisions.
  • Represented owners, developers and contractors in the implementation of solar photovoltaic power systems.
  • Represented a national homebuilder in suit by homeowner alleging consumer fraud act violations.
  • Represented a local developer in unconstitutional takings claim against municipality.
